In reviewing the Office of National Drug Control Policy’s (ONDCP) website, I found their “myths and facts” page. Even knowing that I wouldn’t like what I read, I was actually a little surprised. I found a number of “truths” and statements that stink of H.J. Anslinger.
I thought it would be interesting to dissect their list of myths and facts, so here goes.

I just saw the following video, and was incredibly impressed with Tennessee Congressman Steve Cohen and the manner in which not only did he stick to his guns, he aggressively and professionally attacked his opposer, FBI Director Robert Mueller.
Mr. Mueller had only the same, tired excuses with him; but Congressman Cohen was prepared.
Check it for yourself:

I just finished watching ‘High: The True Tale of American Marijuana’ via my computer care of Netflix.
I can’t say how incredibly impressed I was with this documentary. John touches on so many aspects of the uses of marijuana, and the reasons it is not legal.
Sure, most of it is the same stuff you hear all the time, but it’s a very convenient package with visuals to go along with the information.
From the description:
Filmmaker John Holowach directs this fascinating documentary about the causes and effects of the war on drugs. It also delves into the little-known politics and economics behind the battle and exposes the broken lives and casualties left behind. Holowach examines the infamous drug rehab program Straight, Inc., the fight against pain medicine misuse, the history of the marijuana legalization movement and more.

I first saw this video on NORML.org, one of the leaders in our little fight. Basically, a very valid question was asked of Gil Kerilikowske, and not only did he completely blow it off, he stated that:
We’re a country of free speech, and so I think the last thing anyone in the administration would do would be to supress free speech and that discussion. As regards to “legalization,” it’s not in the president’s vocabulary, and it’s not in mine.

You hear this a lot when you say you believe marijuana should be legalized.
Just a bunch of lazy potheads that want to get stoned and not get in trouble. That’s how the whole country would be if we legalized it.
I’m not going to attack all the horribly wrong and misinformed parts of that statement, but I do want to talk about the weird stereotype, and how it has a negative impact on the movement as a whole.
As with every topic in life, a few bad apples spoil the something or other. I’ll share a couple of my ideas on how we can solve some of the perception problems on our end.

I started to write a post poking at the side effects of marijuana and comparing them to other drugs (you know, you can overdose on Tylenol, but not weed).
I thought to myself “I bet that site on all those commercials makes a good case against marijuana use.” So I head to abovetheinfluence.com to research what they have to say.
Sigh. Now my post is on hold while I talk about misinformation.
It seems that a major issue with educating others about the exponentially lower risks associated with marijuana use as compared to others is that we have to contend with “experts” who spread poor information.

I feel I’m still a bit new around here, and I have questions a plenty; but I think more important to note are some of the answers I’m getting. It seems that some of the reasons I get for marijuana prohibition are a bit unlikely at best. I want to share one here.
ATF: I just realized that the acronym for Above The Flat is ‘ATF.’
Anywho…
ATF: So why is it illegal?
Unlikely Answer: Because of the greed. Especially by that of the cigarette/tobacco companies. You see, legalizing pot would mean people could buy that instead of cigs, and they would lose money. And we all know how much weight they carry in Washington.
Why is this unlikely?

In my quest to further understand marijuana legalization and the barriers that stand before it, I happen upon an article at High Times by Jon Gettman titled: “The Top Ten Obstacles to Marijuana Law Reform.”
If you, like me, want to learn more about some of the reasons you can’t puff for fun legally then you should really read that article. Kinda eye-opening. And you should probably learn more about, and follow Jon himself. You can do this at least by checking these sites:

As this is my first post, I’m going to give you some backgrounds and reasonings as to why this site exists.
I guess the slogan pretty much says it. It’s not very catchy, but that’s all I could come up with. To find the truth about marijuana prohibition. Actually, there’s a bit more to it.
